Re: Suspension/Banning of Francisco Hererra
Hi Joe, It has come to our attention through the KPFA gossip network,
that there was some kind of formal complaint to the attorney general,
regarding raising money for a defunct school(New College).
That we and you, Joe, should learn about this in this manner, nearly two weeks
after the incident, is troubling and goes to the deepest part of what
is wrong at KPFA. We're told it's a personnel matter, and then
management and all their collaborators in the union, have a good
backroom laugh about it, then do their best to use it to wound or
embarrass their "enemies." If in fact there was some kind of complaint
from one of the very frustrated New College factions, or from one of
the gentrifying realtors, who want to get rid of New College for good
and build a high rise, Francisco Herrera has the right to know, and
defend himself with the truth in a timely fashion. If management was
interested in getting to the bottom of it, why didn't it interview
Francisco——a long-time producer at KPFA, to find out what happened
from his perspective, and explore the righteousness of the complaint
from there. Then decide what action is needed, based on the merits.
Instead, we have total silence, except for the whisper of the
gossipers over heard in the back rooms, and a ban of a beloved folk
singer and international known human rights activist.
Finally, we are going into Thursday, and still, the executive
producers of Flashpoints and La Onda Bajita have been told nothing
about whether Francisco will be unbanned in time for Fridays
Flashpoints and La Onda shows. Flashpoints is scheduled to broadcast
live from the San Francisco day-labor center in the mission, where
Francisco always plays a key role. Please tell us where we go from
here. Are we being ordered to keep Francsico Herrera off the air
another week? Is he also banned from playing music and singing on the
air? We anxiously await your response.
Respectfully,
Dennis Bernstein for the Flashpoints team
Miguel Gavilan Molina for La Onda Bajita
