Subject: Note from GM
Good morning,
I received a call from a listener this morning asking why KPFA was choosing not to provide coverage of the Oakland 100 and JR Valrey's arrest at a protest following the killing. Unfortunately, it seems
management's notice to on-air staff regarding Pacifica Foundation's broadcasting and editorial policies has been misconstrued as KPFA management discouraging coverage.
This is not the case. KPFA's Hard Knock Radio, Morning Show, News, Saturday Morning Talkies, and Sunday Sedition, to name a few have provided excellent coverage of the unjust killing of Oscar Grant by BART police and the public outrage that followed it. htp://www.kpfa.org/archives
Although we do a lot of work covering news other major media ignores, we can do more. I want to encourage all of you to cover today's court hearing of JR Valrey and the Oakland 100 and any additional hearings and events regarding the killing of Oscar Grant. I also encourage you all to provide coverage of the on-going racial profiling and police violence against young black and brown men and women. You are expected to provide content to the public that is informative and useful. You are also expected to provide content that observes the station/foundation policies. If you have any questions about coverage you want to do, announcements you want to make, etc. contact your department head, Michael Yoshida and myself. It is our responsibility to help and support you in performing your work at KPFA.
